Tell New Mexico to Adopt Strong Pollution Rules for Oil and Gas Now

Oil and gas companies in New Mexico's Permian and San Juan basins release massive amounts of methane and toxic pollutants, much of it unreported.

New Mexico's proposed Methane Abatement Rule would use independent monitoring to detect large leaks and require companies to fix them quickly. The Environmental Improvement Board decides December 1-8. Add your name to urge the board to adopt the rule and hold polluters accountable.

Dear Environmental Improvement Board members,

I urge you to adopt a strong Methane Abatement Rule, 20.2.51.NMAC (EIB 26-78 (R)).

Independent satellite data show that large methane leaks from oil and gas facilities are routine in New Mexico and rarely reported to the state. Every unrepaired leak wastes public resources, increases climate pollution, and makes nearby air more toxic.

As the federal government abandons its super-emitter program, New Mexico must lead. Please adopt the rule with fast, enforceable investigation and repair deadlines; full public access to leak notifications and operator responses; and zero-emission standards for pneumatic controllers.

New Mexicans deserve clean air and accountability. Please adopt the Methane Abatement Rule without delay.
