Don’t Let Trump Weaken LNG Safety Rules

Explosions. Nosebleeds. Leaks. Asthma. Fires. Spills. People living by liquefied “natural” gas (LNG) pipelines and plants face significant risks to their health and safety every day.

Right now, the Trump Administration is preparing to rewrite rules for LNG, which could weaken safety requirements and lead to more incidents. With your input, we can demand strong safety standards that prioritize community input, worker safety, and transparency of the risks associated with living near LNG export infrastructure.

These safeguards are meant to protect workers and communities from dangerous and volatile methane gas and LNG infrastructure. It’s important that these are updated, as the existing guidelines are over 40 years old, are profoundly out of date, and don’t effectively create transparency and public safety.

Rather than recognizing they urgently require updates to be effective, this process seeks to deregulate a critical agency in the interest of saving costs for the LNG industry rather than the people whose lives are on the line. I urge the Administration to prioritize safety, transparency, and accountability rather than industry profits. You should ensure workers and communities living, working, and recreating near pipeline infrastructure have effective standards to keep them safe.

In order to best improve their response, PHMSA should seek guidance from communities and workers that have experience with pipeline failures and explosions. In this process, PHMSA should be seeking stakeholder input on ways to set strong and specific standards for methane leakage reduction from methane gas pipeline infrastructure, avoid siting new gas pipeline infrastructure near existing sources of pollution, and the costs to the community of pipeline leakage, ruptures, explosion, and other failures.
