Request DEQ Hold a Public Hearing on Formosa Plastics Plant’s Vinyl Chloride Permit

The Formosa Plastics Plant in East Baton Rouge Parish has been a bad neighbor since the 80s.

  • It is a major source of toxic air pollution, producing 10 tons of criteria air pollutants a year.
  • Residents who live near the plant in Scotlandville, Delmont, and Istrouma have rates of heart disease and asthma that exceed the national average.
  • Last October, four people were hospitalized after being exposed to ammonia at the facility.

Right now, Formosa is trying to change the amount of vinyl chloride monomer they process at the plant, which could increase the amount of vinyl chloride monomer in the air in EBR

Vinyl chloride monomer is considered a known human carcinogen, which means exposure to the gas is associated with an increased risk of cancer.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) should not grant any modifications to Formosa’s permit without hearing from the people this will impact the most. Tell DEQ to hold a full public hearing on this permit!
